Wrist pain? You may have De Quervain’s synovitis..

So what is it?

De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis (DT) is an inflammation of the tendons around your thumb and wrist. The inflammation of the tendon coverings can often cause you pain and functional impairment in activities involving gripping and lifting. Often the pain is very sharp and can cause obstruction to many day to day activities.

Who commonly gets it?

It commonly affects people aged 30-50 and in the dominant hand. Females are 6-10x more likely to be affected. It occurs more frequently in jobs that require repetitive tasks such as typing and lifting.

How do i know I have it?

If you have DT, you are likely to experience pain below, and into your thumb (see image above). Other signs that you may have DT include pain when lifting objects, swelling around your wrist and swelling around site of your pain.

So what should I do about it?

You have several options for the management of DT. If you have a mild case you may be manage your symptoms with:
– Rest from aggravating activities
– Stretching and strengthening exercises
– Ergonomic modification
– Anti-inflammatory medications

If you have a severe case you may need to consider:
– Steroidal injections
– A surgical release
