Ankle Sprain Treatment in West End, Brisbane

The injury people assume needs no treatment — and the reason so many ankles keep rolling for years afterwards.

An ankle sprain is a ligament injury, usually from rolling the foot inward. It is the most common sporting injury and the most under-treated: a large proportion of people who sprain an ankle go on to have recurrent sprains and ongoing instability, largely because the first one was never rehabilitated.

What you are likely to notice

  • Pain and swelling on the outside of the ankle
  • Bruising that appears over the following days
  • Difficulty weight-bearing initially
  • Later: a sense the ankle gives way on uneven ground

What usually causes it

  • Rolling the ankle on uneven ground, landing or changing direction
  • A previous sprain that was never fully rehabilitated — by far the biggest risk factor for the next one
  • Reduced balance and calf strength

How we treat it at Forge

Early management to settle swelling and restore movement, then the part that is usually skipped entirely: balance and proprioception retraining, and calf and peroneal strengthening. That is what stops the next one, and it is why we do not discharge an ankle just because it stopped hurting.

How long it takes

Pain settles in weeks; the protective control that prevents recurrence takes longer and is worth finishing.

Questions

What people ask about this

Do I need an X-ray?

Not always. There are clear clinical rules for when an X-ray is needed after an ankle injury, and your physiotherapist applies them at the first visit — if you meet them, we refer you.

It stopped hurting, so am I finished?

Pain-free is not the same as recovered. The balance and strength deficits outlast the pain, and they are what predicts the next sprain.

Why does my ankle keep rolling?

Chronic ankle instability, and it is common precisely because the first sprain was treated as nothing. It responds well to a proper proprioception and strength program even years later.

Not sure this is what you have? That is exactly what an assessment is for — and if it turns out to be something else, we will tell you.
