Shockwave Therapy in West End, Brisbane

Non-invasive treatment for stubborn tendon and heel pain that has not responded to anything else — no injections, no surgery.

If a musculoskeletal problem has been with you for months and other treatment has not shifted it, shockwave therapy is often what breaks the stalemate. Our physiotherapists use radial extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) to stimulate healing in injured soft tissue — without injections or surgery.

What is shockwave therapy?

Radial shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that delivers acoustic pressure waves into the affected tissue. It is effective for both sub-acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions, and especially for the ones that resist conventional treatment.

How does it work?

Your physiotherapist applies gel to the skin, then delivers radial pressure waves into the area with a hand-held device. Those waves stimulate blood flow, reduce inflammation and trigger your body’s own repair process. Every physiotherapist at Forge is trained and certified in its safe use.

How long does a session take?

Five to fifteen minutes per treatment area, depending on the condition and how large the area is. It is normally added to a consultation rather than booked on its own — the add-on fee is on the pricing page.

What people ask about shockwave

Does shockwave therapy hurt?

Some mild discomfort during treatment is normal, but it is usually very tolerable and short-lived. We adjust the intensity to your comfort, and many people report immediate relief afterwards.

How many sessions will I need?

Most people benefit from five to eight sessions, roughly one a week. The number depends on the type and location of the injury, how long you have had it, and how your body responds.

Most notice a change after the first session; significant improvement typically comes after three to five, with optimal results in six to eight weeks.

Are there side effects?

It is safe and well tolerated. Minor effects can include mild discomfort during or after treatment, and temporary redness or swelling in the area. There is no recovery downtime.

Who should not have shockwave therapy?
  • Pregnant clients
  • Anyone with active cancer
  • People taking blood thinners such as warfarin
  • Anyone who has had a corticosteroid injection in the last six weeks
  • Cases of acute inflammation or infection

Your physiotherapist screens for all of these at your assessment.

What should I do after a session?

Avoid exercising the treated area for about 48 hours. Your physiotherapist will give you a rehabilitation plan with targeted exercises — shockwave opens the window, loading is what closes it. Mild soreness afterwards is normal and settles quickly.
