Our nearest neighbours — and the suburb where the daily walk home is itself a load your knees have to tolerate.
Highgate Hill is the closest residential suburb to our clinic on Montague Road, and it is also, as the name promises, uphill. That shows up in what people come in with.
Walking a gradient every day loads knees, calves and Achilles tendons far more than flat ground does — going down more than going up. For most people that is free conditioning. For a knee with early osteoarthritis, a grumbling Achilles or a patellofemoral problem, it is a daily dose of exactly the thing that hurts.
The fix is almost never ‘stop walking the hill’. It is building enough calf and quadriceps capacity to tolerate it, which is why our rehabilitation happens on a gym floor and not only on a plinth.
Rehabilitation works on attendance. Being ten minutes from the clinic is the difference between a program you finish and one you abandon in week three — which is the real reason we mention proximity at all.
