Bone responds to load — which makes the right exercise a treatment, not just general advice.
Osteoporosis means reduced bone density and increased fracture risk. It is usually silent until a fracture happens, and exercise is one of the few things that can improve bone density directly — but only if it is the right kind, at the right intensity, prescribed by someone who knows what is safe for your bones.
Progressive resistance training and impact loading at an intensity that actually stimulates bone — light weights and walking alone do not do it. Our exercise physiologists prescribe this specifically, alongside balance training to reduce falls risk, and they know which movements to avoid where vertebral fracture risk is a concern.
Bone adapts slowly. Programs run in terms of six to twelve months, and balance and strength improve well before any density change is measurable.
For most people with osteoporosis, appropriately prescribed and supervised resistance training is both safe and one of the most effective things available. What matters is that it is prescribed — loaded spinal flexion, for instance, is one to avoid.
Walking is good for general health but is not a strong enough stimulus to change bone density on its own. Resistance and impact loading are what bone responds to.
Balance and lower limb strength reduce falls risk, and a fall prevented is a fracture prevented. Our clinical classes and Fit Over 50 classes cover exactly this.
Not sure this is what you have? That is exactly what an assessment is for — and if it turns out to be something else, we will tell you.
