Golfer's Elbow Treatment in West End, Brisbane

Pain on the inside of the elbow — the mirror image of tennis elbow, and treated on the same principle.

Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylalgia) is a tendon problem where the wrist flexor muscles attach on the inside of the elbow. Like its better-known counterpart, it usually has nothing to do with the sport it is named after and everything to do with gripping.

What you are likely to notice

  • Pain on the inner side of the elbow
  • Worse gripping, lifting with the palm up, or wringing a cloth
  • Tenderness on the bony point inside the elbow
  • Sometimes ache down the forearm

What usually causes it

  • A sudden increase in gripping or pulling work
  • Repetitive tool use, keyboard work or lifting
  • Gym work that added pulling volume quickly
  • Reduced shoulder and forearm capacity shifting load to the tendon

How we treat it at Forge

Identify and reduce the provoking load, then progressive loading for the wrist flexors and the whole arm. Shockwave therapy is a reasonable addition when it has been present for months and has not responded.

How long it takes

Several months is normal for tendon at the elbow. Progress is steady and the usual setback is returning to full load too early.

Questions

What people ask about this

Is it the same as tennis elbow?

Same principle, opposite side. Tennis elbow affects the outside of the elbow and the wrist extensors; golfer's elbow affects the inside and the flexors.

Should I stop lifting?

Reduce and modify rather than stop. Tendons need load to adapt, and complete rest leaves you weaker when you return.

Will a brace help?

A counterforce brace can reduce symptoms enough to keep working while the tendon rebuilds. It manages the symptom; the loading does the work.

Not sure this is what you have? That is exactly what an assessment is for — and if it turns out to be something else, we will tell you.
