Herniated Disc Treatment in West End, Brisbane

A slipped disc is not slipped, and the word does more damage than the disc does.

A herniated disc means part of the soft centre of a spinal disc has pushed out through the tougher outer ring, sometimes irritating a nearby nerve. Nothing slips. Discs also heal — herniations frequently reduce on repeat imaging over months, including large ones, which is not what most people are told when they are handed the scan.

What you are likely to notice

  • Back pain, often with pain travelling into one leg
  • Pain worse with sitting, bending forward or coughing
  • Pins and needles, numbness or weakness in a specific pattern
  • Sometimes very little back pain and mostly leg symptoms

What usually causes it

  • Load through a flexed spine, often lifting and twisting together
  • A gradual build-up rather than one event, in most cases
  • Reduced trunk and hip capacity for the load being applied
  • Age-related disc change, which is normal and not the same as damage

How we treat it at Forge

We work out which movements reduce your symptoms and which provoke them, then use that as the treatment rather than a generic exercise sheet. Hands-on work and specific loading to settle nerve irritation, then a progressive program to rebuild what the spine can tolerate. Where a muscle has been inhibited by the nerve irritation, Neubie helps re-establish the signal before strength work is asked to do anything.

How long it takes

Leg symptoms usually settle before back symptoms, and the pain typically moves back towards the spine as it improves — that direction is a good sign and we will point it out. Weeks to months, not days.

Questions

What people ask about this

Will the disc go back in?

That is not quite the right model, but the useful answer is yes, it improves. Herniations commonly reduce in size over months on repeat imaging, and symptoms usually settle well before that happens.

Do I need surgery?

The large majority do not. Surgery is considered mainly for progressive weakness, or for leg pain that has genuinely been given conservative treatment and time and has not improved.

Is my scan result as bad as it sounds?

Probably not. Disc bulges, protrusions and degeneration are found in very large proportions of people with no pain at all. The scan describes your spine; it does not describe your pain.

Not sure this is what you have? That is exactly what an assessment is for — and if it turns out to be something else, we will tell you.
