Hip Osteoarthritis Treatment in West End, Brisbane

Groin pain and stiffness that make putting on socks the daily test — and which strength work reliably improves.

Hip osteoarthritis involves gradual joint change and typically shows up as groin pain rather than pain over the outside of the hip. Like the knee, it responds well to strengthening, and like the knee, the language used about it often frightens people away from the treatment.

What you are likely to notice

  • Groin pain with walking and weight-bearing
  • Stiffness after sitting or in the morning
  • Trouble putting on shoes and socks, or getting in and out of a car
  • Reduced turning of the hip

What usually causes it

  • Age-related joint change, which does not automatically mean pain
  • Reduced gluteal and quadriceps strength
  • Previous hip injury or childhood hip conditions
  • Long periods of inactivity

How we treat it at Forge

Strength through the glutes, quadriceps and trunk, dosed to what the hip tolerates, plus hands-on work and movement retraining for the things that have become hard. Hydrotherapy is genuinely useful here when land-based loading is too painful to begin with.

How long it takes

Twelve weeks or more of consistent work before the change is convincing. Where a replacement is on the horizon, the same work before surgery improves recovery afterwards.

Questions

What people ask about this

Is pain on the outside of my hip the same thing?

Usually not. Pain over the bony point at the side is more often gluteal tendinopathy or bursitis, which is a different problem with a different treatment — and one where shockwave therapy is often useful.

Should I exercise before a hip replacement?

Yes. Going into surgery stronger is one of the better-supported ways to come out of it better. We call it prehabilitation and it is worth the weeks.

What about walking — good or bad?

Generally good, at a dose your hip tolerates. Walking alone is rarely enough to build the strength the joint needs, which is why it sits alongside a loading program rather than replacing it.

Not sure this is what you have? That is exactly what an assessment is for — and if it turns out to be something else, we will tell you.
