1: You have poor shoulder movement
Do you struggle reaching towards your cupboards? Do you have difficulty reaching behind your back? Do you have shoulder pain when trying to comb your hair?
If you answered yes to any of these questions you may have limited shoulder flexibility. Our shoulder joint is one of the most flexible joints in the body and when it isn’t moving correctly, you can experience considerable symptoms.
If you are like most people, you sit for long periods of time whether it be at your desk, your car or when watching television. This can eventually lead to muscles tightening around your shoulder over time. The problem then lies when you then try to perform tasks that require a lot of flexibility, your body may not be able to tolerate what you are asking it to do. To minimise the effects of sitting for long periods of time, set an alarm on your phone to walk around the office each hour.
2. You have poor shoulder strength
These may be signs that you are lacking shoulder strength.
The shoulder itself moves in many planes which requires strength and stability. If you develop muscle imbalances or weaknesses over time, this can lead you into pain.
At our clinic we measure your strength with a medical device so that an accurate reading can be given. We look for specific ratios of strength to ensure your shoulder is functioning correctly.
If you haven’t been tested for your rotator cuff specific strength, we strongly consider coming in to have this done.
3. You perform aggravating tasks
When you pick at a wound, this can delay it from healing quickly. In a similar fashion, if you perform repetitive movements that make your shoulder sore, it’s possible that your symptoms continue for a substantial period of time.
With physiotherapy we like to suggest modifications to make your daily tasks easier. Over time we will try to progress your movement intensity so that you can gradually get back to everything that you love.
