Studio Pilates

What is Studio Pilates?

Studio Pilates is how Pilates was traditionally taught, prior to group reformer classes becoming incredibly popular. In a Studio Pilates class, you’ll workout on all the Pilates studio equipment (yes, there’s more than just the reformer in a Pilates studio!) and have an individualised exercise program.

At Forge, our Studio Pilates class is a fusion of traditional Pilates with the additional element of clinical rehabilitative knowledge delivered by our highly trained Pilates instructors. Starting with a 1:1 appointment then moving to small groups of 4:1, you’ll quickly improve your fitness and wellbeing.

Prior to attending Studio Pilates, an initial assessment is compulsory. This is a 1:1 appointment taken by a comprehensively trained Pilates Instructor. The appointment ensures you get the most out of your Pilates experience at Forge, allowing us to fully understand your goals, fitness levels and previous injury history so an appropriate exercise program can be designed.

This service is suitable for all ages and abilities, injuries, chronic conditions and life circumstances.

How can Pilates help?

Pilates was originally developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 20th century following the principles of Contrology, focusing on improving movement, strength and control. The method showed astounding benefits for fitness, bodily function and awareness, as well as immunity and mental health.

Every body is different and Pilates is a movement modality that caters for this, with a wide variety of exercises and exercise modifications. Pilates improves muscle activation and functional movements as well as develops, body awareness, strength and coordination. In addition to the health and fitness benefits, Pilates draws attention to body posture. Not just optimal postural alignment but also identifying postural faults that can be corrected with specific exercises.

In order to attain maximum benefits from Pilates, the exercises need to be performed with accuracy and precision. Because of this, we keep our Pilates classes small (maximum of 4) to ensure you work with close eyes on form and technique. We also recommend a private one-on-one class for a start your Pilates journey.

By practicing Pilates regularly, you can achieve a number of health benefits:

  • Improved core strength and stability
  • Improved coordination, posture and balance
  • Improved total body muscle tone and activation, including in the abdominals, lower back, hips and buttocks
  • Increased flexibility
  • Increased bone density
  • Enhancing muscle control
  • Injury rehabilitation
  • Injury prevention

Initial Studio Pilates Assessment

Initial Studio Pilates Assessments are conducted by our highly trained Pilates instructors and are 60 minutes. Several different tests will be completed to allow our instructors to correctly identify key areas of concern, fitness goals and health and wellness circumstances. From this information, we design an individualised Pilates program to complete during group classes or 1:1 sessions. Upon request, this assessment can be conducted by a Forge Physiotherapist.

Real Time Ultrasound

During your initial assessment, our practitioner will use a real-time ultrasound to observe the activation and endurance of your transverse abdominus and pelvic floor muscles. This activation is not visible from the outside of the body. The ultrasound will let you visually see your core activation that is sometimes hard to feel and learn. This activation is a fundamental principle in Pilates and will help with getting maximum results from your classes.

Studio Pilates Private 1:1

To see quick results and fast improvement in your Pilates practice, we recommend 1:1 sessions. In a private lesson you get a greater opportunity to learn how your body moves, teach body awareness and the key principles of Pilates.

Studio Pilates Classes 4:1

After an initial assessment, your Pilates Instructor will write you an individualised Studio Pilates program specifically designed to address your health and fitness goals. Your Pilates Instructor will guide you through this program during a Studio Pilates class. Quality of service is of upmost importance to us which is why our classes have a maximum of 4 clients. Whether you’re new to Pilates, are recently injured, working on rehabilitation or looking to improve your general fitness, these classes will be suitable for you.

Ante and Post Natal Pilates

Our Studio Pilates classes are perfect for all stages of pregnancy. With highly educated practitioners, who all have extensive experience with ante and post natal Pilates, you will have a Pilates program specific to your needs, regardless of the stage of pregnancy or fitness level. An initial assessment by a Forge Physiotherapist is required prior to starting Pilates with Forge. You will also require clearance from your GP.
